Minimum Qualifications
  • Adherence to Department Policies: Members must agree to follow the policies and procedures of this department and closely adhere to the established chain of command.
  • Age: Members must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Michigan Drivers License. Members cannot be a convicted felon.
  • Availability: Members must be available 24 hours per day, 365 days per year with exceptions being made for vacations, out of town travel, and excused absences. Members may not be an active participant or member of another Fire Department.
  • Education: Members must have graduated from an accredited high school or have a high school equivalent diploma.
  • Facial Hair: Beards or facial hair that interferes with the face piece seal of an SCBA shall be prohibited for all members. If eyeglasses are worn, the member shall use frames that do not pass through the seal area of the face piece.
  • Training: Members must successfully complete or agree to successfully complete the Michigan Firefighter I course and receive certification within 24 months of joining the Fire Department. They must also successfully complete or agree to successfully complete the Michigan Firefighter II course and receive certification within 5 years of joining the Fire Department.
Knowledge & Abilities
  • Must be knowledgeable of department rules, policies and procedures.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of geography, streets and important locations in the City of Ludington.
  • Must have ability to work effectively with the public.
  • Must have ability to work quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Must be able to understand oral instructions, accept authority and work effectively with other department members.
  • Must be able to work effectively under stress.
