DEPARTMENTAL OPERATIONS

The Ludington Police Department consists of fourteen sworn police officers and one full-time Administrative Assistant and one part-time Clerical Assistant.  Each summer we hire two sworn Seasonal Officers to assist with patrol of the city beach/park and the downtown areas.

The Ludington Police Reserve Unit consists of 8 Reserve Officers and assists with the policing of special events, and supplement normal road patrols.


Uniformed Patrol

As depicted in the organizational chart the main component of the Ludington Police Department is Uniform Road Patrol, consisting of three Uniformed Sergeants and seven Uniformed Officers.  They are divided into two squads each with a dayshift and a nightshift, with all members working a twelve hour work shift.

Road Patrol responds to all calls for service, traffic enforcement and complaint investigation.


Support

Detective Sergeant

The D/Sgt. conducts follow-up investigations, oversees the Evidence Room, and supervises the dayshift patrol officers assigned to one of the squads, as well as the School Resource Officer and the S.S.C.E.N.T. Officer.

Drug Enforcement

One L.P.D. officer is assigned to the State, Sheriff, and City Enforcement of Narcotic Team (S.S.C.E.N.T.).  This drug concept team is supervised by the Michigan State Police and is staffed by a number of local departments.

School Resource Officer

One L.P.D. officer is assigned to work in the various buildings of the Ludington Area School District, as well the Ludington Area Catholic School, in the prevention and investigation of crimes that are connected with those schools.


Motorcycle Unit

Currently four members of the department are certified police motorcycle operators.  These officers utilize two departmental Harley-Davidson Police motorcycles in policing special events, parades, regular patrols and traffic enforcement.


Sheriffs Emergency Response Team (S.E.R.T.)

Two members are trained and equipped as S.E.R.T. officers.  They respond to critical incidents, barricaded subjects and high-risk entry incidents. 

 
Marine Patrol, Fire Suppression and Search, Rescue & Recovery

Partnering together the Ludington Fire Department and the Ludington Police Department operate HARBOR ONE conducting marine patrols, fire suppression and search, rescue and recovery operations in and around the Ludington Harbor.

HARBOR ONE is a 26’ Harbor Guard boat powered by twin 225 hp. Mercury outboard engines.  The fire monitor and jet drive propulsion unit are powered by a separate 300 hp. Mercruiser inboard engine.  Acquisition funding was provided by a Federal Port Security grant.

The vessel is equipped with eight foot dive doors on both sides allowing for the easy recovery of swimmers, drowning victims and divers.
