QUALIFICATIONS OF A FIREFIGHTER

Nature of Work:

A firefighter performs firefighting work in the protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing and preventing fires. An individual in this position is responsible for rapid and efficient performance using specialized equipment under emergency conditions. Work includes firefighting, rescue, emergency medical care, vehicle extrication, and efficient operation and maintenance of equipment. Although work is performed under general supervision and established regulations, it requires initiative and an individual understanding of fire fighting. fire prevention, rescue methods, and emergency medical care techniques. Work is reviewed by command officers through inspections, observations and obtained results.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

A firefighter may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties: These examples do not necessarily include all duties, which the firefighter is expected to perform.

  1. Drive Fire Department apparatus or other emergency equipment to the scene of a fire, connect apparatus to a hydrant or other water source and pump water a proper pressures. The firefighter may also be required to direct operations until relieved by a superior fire officer.
  2. Lay and control holes lines, erect ladders. perform rescues and participate in all firefighting operations.
  3. Perform inspection work and pre-incident planning.

 Firefighter Qualifications:

  1. Monitor the operation of meters and pumps and make necessary adjustments or changes as are required to sustain an effective fire attack.
  2. Aggressively pursue on-going training in such subjects as fire fighting methods, equipment operations, hydraulics, vehicle extrication, medical care procedures, public fire education and pre-incident planning.
  3. Perform instructor duties at department training sessions as required.
  4. Perform fire prevention/community education activities.
  5. Check and maintain pumps, trucks and other firefighting equipment.
  6. Keep the fire station and fire apparatus in a clean and orderly condition.
  7. Make rescue and emergency calls and administer first aid and emergency medical treatment as required.

STANDARDS FOR A FIREFIGHTER

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Age: Members must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Michigan Drivers License. Members cannot be a convicted felon.
  2. Availability: Members must be available 24 hours per day, 365 days per year with exceptions being made for vacations, out of town travel, and excused absences. Members may not be an active participant or member of another fire department.
  3.  Education: Members must have graduated from an accredited high school or have a high school equivalent diploma.
  4. Training: Members must successfully complete or agree to successfully complete the Michigan Firefighter I course and receive certification within 24 months of joining the fire department. They must also successfully complete or agree to successfully complete the Michigan Firefighter II course and receive certification within 5 years of joining the fire department.
  5. Facial Hair: Beards or facial hair that interferes with the face piece seal of an SCBA shall be prohibited for all members. If eyeglasses are worn, the member shall use frames that do not pass through the seal area of the face piece.
  6. Adherence to Department Policies: Members must agree to follow the policies and procedures of this department and closely adhere to the established chain-of-command.

 Knowledge & Abilities:

  1. Must be knowledgeable of department rules, policies and procedures.
  2. Must have thorough knowledge of geography, streets and important. locations in the City of Ludington.
  3. Must have ability to work effectively with the public.
  4. Must have ability to work quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  5. Must be able to understand oral instructions, accept authority and work effectively with other department members.
  6. Must be able to work effectively under stress.
